King of Kings School for children was founded by BCM in 1998. It began with 22 young students tucked into a few cinder-block cubicles, shaded by a thatched roof. It has grown steadily, and now, in a new facility, hosts about 400 students ranging through eleventh grade. The three-storey school contains 4500 square feet of classrooms, overseen by a full-time faculty of 35 teachers and staff. King of Kings is officially an “English Medium Matriculation” school, in keeping with historical nomenclature of the British Empire.
Prince of Peace School was opened in early 2006, with 120 students. It is designed to accommodate the poorest of Rameswaram’s populace. These children, some gathered half-naked from the streets, are given three sets of clothes, books, bags, lunch and transportation. Their education is first rate, yet without the $2 monthly tuition fee required at King of Kings School. For most of the families of the Prince of Peace students, it is their only option for any education for their children.
Tutoring centers sponsored by BCM have emerged in recent years as an excellent way to introduce the Gospel into otherwise closed villages, and to reach into many unreached Hindu and Muslim families with the simple Gospel. The idea was first tried in island villages near the Training Center, and has since spread beyond into the Indian mainland, in regions where a village church planting work has already begun.
Among the growing student populations of the King of Kings and Prince of Peace schools, now numbering 800 children, with several hundred on waiting lists, the Gospel of Jesus is a daily presence in their school experience. They are discipled naturally, as their schoolwork is conducted in an environment of Scripture, prayer, worship and testimony. For the tens of thousands of other children on the Island of Rameswaram, BCM has for nearly a decade been hosting a one-week Vacation Bible School, during the brief time each Spring after April graduation and before classes begin again in Early June.
